The World First Wave Farm Goes Live!

“Hey guys, I found something after this post - Ocean Power Conversion Technologies. This is cool too!”

Interesting enough I have stumbled upon an interesting post. The world’s first wave farm has now gone live in Portugal!!

Okay, what is wave farm you may wonder. Wave here refers to water wave that occurs on the free surface of the ocean. They usually result from wind, and are also referred to as wind waves. Some waves can travel thousands of miles before reaching land. They range in size from small ripples to huge rogue waves. If you ever go to the beach before, I am sure you have seen the ocean wave. For 24/7/365 the ocean wave is forever there rolling from far hitting the seaside. Therefore, ocean wave actually contents great amount of energy.

Pelamis

So what happens is this group of scientist has invented a snake-like structure and placed it the middle of ocean at Agucadoura, off the coast of northern Portugal to function as a wave farm. As a wave farm, it is of cause meant to harvest wave. The structure is semi-submerged, articulated structure composed of cylindrical sections linked by hinged joints. When wave runs over the structure, the hinged joints move accordingly and then subsequently induce a generator to generate electricity. Electricity will then be transmitted to land.

In fact this is quite a good news to the world as the renewable-energy technology has again gone one step forward and hopefully by the near future this wave farm technology can be commercialized among countries. However I believe this will not be easy as the transmission cost will be incredibly high. It will definitely be more economical to remain with fossil energy source at the time being. Nevertheless, this achievement is superb! Kudos to all the engineers and scientists behind!

For a closer look, check out the detailed report at:-

Or you may watch the wave farm in action in the video below. Well, it looks simple but I believe hundred and thousands of scientists have worked hard to achieve this!

* Small talk - I hope I don’t get electricity shock while swimming in the sea next time. ;)

WARNING: Shallow Water Blackout

Finally after 6 days of not writing any post, I have got something to write of. Okay I can see many people are now laughing at me on how I broke my 1-day-1-post promise. Never mind on you but I hope this post that I’m going to write add some value to you.

As a usual day I wake up to my computer this morning. Everyday of this time I enjoy clicking the stumble button at my toolbar. So I did stumbling and come to my attention is this interesting piece of article - The Secret of The Human Body. Well this is a list of tricks to your brain that you can eliminate certain uneasiness with some simple things to do. I personally like the fifth one which shows the way how to clear your stuffed nose as you guys know that I always have some problems with my sensitive nose.

While the list goes on, the interesting part came in that this statement drew my attention “Breathe underwater” Wow..what kind of tricks is that..and to my surprise, the author claims that we can stay in the water a longer time with hyperventilate. Interesting enough he explains that the reason that we need to come up to the surface to breath is because the density of CO2 in our blood creates a sense of urgency to breath. And with hyperventilate so to say, it can actually increase the density of 02 to lower our blood acidity.Fair enough, the explanation is logical.

Shallow Water Blackout

However if you notice the first comment that left by a commenter, this hyperventilate is actually nothing new to the world of divers and the worst thing is that this trick has a very big trap behind. Many people has been drowned using this tactic! People who are physically strong and fit, good swimmers who have tons of experiences are normally the victim. Why? Shallow Water Blackout. I am not sure whether you have come across this term or not. As the term says, people blackout in shallow water. Imagine when you swim halfway under the pool and suddenly you blackout quietly. That will be a very slim chance of surviving if you are not been noticed. And to make thing worse, this blackout actually has no sign of happening! Scary~

According to the wikipedia, the act of hyperventilating is only shutting down your nature respiration system but not really increase the saturation of O2. Another myth! To learn more details I suggest you the wikipedia page here. There is a very long article with full theory and technical backing up.

Anyway I have consulted our expert swimmer friend regarding this shallow water blackout thingy and apparently he has not yet come across this term too. Below is his reply on my question. (You bet who is the expert that I am talking about? ;) )

Questions: Do you know about shallow water blackout? What are your thought on this?

The expert:

Expert Swimmer

I never knew anything about this before. Yeah we used to compete underwater even though we know our oxygen level is running low. Never knew that this is a dangerous act.

But I think this explains another thing when people don’t do underwater dive. Why some people cannot swim longer than what they expected and stop frequently. And why some people are good at one swimming style and not good at the other one?

I think it is because they do not aware of their respiration process when they swim. So when they swim, the amount of oxygen they take in become less and less until they cannot cope and stop. Or maybe sometime when you try to learn some other swimming style like freestyle, you feel not smooth and cannot propel properly, or you feel you don’t have strength to continue. I think this is because when they are learning the particular style, they do not practice the respiration part properly. I seem to notice Athlete swimmers come out of water more frequently than us when they swim, and I noticed they force themselves to gulp in a lot of air. So I guess the tips is to force yourself to take in more air when swim and learn to breath smoothly.

But there’s another point. Sprint runners don’t breathe when they run 100m and 200m because their body and muscle can perform better anabolic ( muscle create oxygen when not breathing, and it get compensated by breathing later on ). So I guess with constant stamina exercises and develop more cardiology exercises can avoid shallow water blackout.

A few interesting points have been shared. First, diving under water can be really a dangerous act; second, good sportsman = breath smoothly; third, muscle can create oxygen? Well I’m not sure about the third one but since the expert say so, have to agree with him ;) (Expert corrected:”muscle doesn’t create oxygen but generate energy from ATP while no oxygen in-take” what is ATP? No idea. Any thought from you?) Final thought, it’s definitely not recommended to hyperventilate before getting into water! Breath as normal rate before you get into under water. You don’t want to be found drowned under the pool do you? So beware!

* Hyperventilate is a act of breath rapidly and deeply. It will in fact cause over-breathing which might result in shallow water blackout if you go diving underwater after that.

I Am Lazy

Just 4 days I have broken my promise that I will update my blog everyday. I am getting lazy now. Too bad I lost my 50 bucks:(

Indeed I am very impressed to see people keep updating their blog yet remain interesting on the contents. I believe those people are people who read a lot. Because without any input, you will hardly get output, agree?

The Days Being A SOHO

It has been 1 month plus that I have gone SOHO(Self Organized Home Office). 1 month is indeed a short period but to me I feel that it is like 3 months long already. Some of you might think work from home is fun and relaxing; some might think that being a SOHO is something to be proud of. But I tell you being a SOHO requires many determinations and discipline. You only can be proud of yourself if you can adhere to what has been set and what has been targeted. It is not easy for me yet.

Working from home has many advantages. You can sleep until whatever time you want, you save cost in traveling to work, you can have cheaper and healthier food at home, you skip the rush hour jam, you can shop at anytime especially at the none peak hour where you can enjoy the spacious shopping mall, and most of all you can save the time in being jammed in the road. (Traffic jam is real annoying! According to statistic, people spend 2 full days in traffic jam every month, it’s almost 7% of your life there!) Isn’t it being a SOHO looks attractive? For sure!

But…there are damn a lot of traps in being a SOHO. First thing first, it’s discipline issue. You truly know that you are able to do all the above mentioned things but you will not do it. Why? Because you are working. You work for your pay check even though you are a SOHO. It doesn’t mean that you do not need to work anymore. You need to be self disciplined to work on your things. If you fail to be self disciplined. That’s it. You will end up spending the whole year wandering here and there doing nothing but yet claim yourself to be a SOHO. SOHO means you are on your own and nobody will monitor you. If you want to be successful, you better stick your ass on your chair and start working.

In fact being a SOHO you need to work even harder compared to your 9-5 job. This is because you have no sense of security at all. You don’t work, you don’t get paid. To worsen the situation, sometime you will not get paid even you have worked. You need to go the extra miles to earn what you are suppose to be earning. Contrary to the normal job, you get your pay check no matter you do your job well or not. Pretty simple to understand right? This is actually something that I am dealing everyday for the past 1 month. Trust me. That is horrible! That is very scary! You will not know when are you going to be rewarded for your so called hard work (sometimes you do not even know whether the work you are doing is a hard work or a stupid work which give no results at all to yourself). Everytime I feel doubt on the thing I am doing, I will try to recall the advice from those guru (I bet you know who I am talking about) to put the security thingy to the least important factor in my needs table. But I am still a newbie here definitely it is a skill that I need to master.

Besides these 2 traps, a SOHO needs to plan properly their own daily, weekly, annually task. Nobody will guide you and you need to get whatever resources to back you up. You plan your task and be sure that the task will lead you to your goals. If you think the task you work on doesn’t help, find another way. If it still doesn’t help, find another one. You need to keep searching for solutions until your goals are achieved. Even after that you still need to keep searching and planning. It needs a lot of creativity and business sense in searching the working way. “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail”. SOHO plan it and embed it into their life and work. This is something I really not good in. I admitted that I am not good in planning. I do planning but still it seldom leads to the goal I wanted. I better put extra effort in this or else I am going to fail here.

So what other traps? I am still figuring out. These are so far the 3 most important things to become a successful SOHO that I have came across. Hey if you are a SOHO and is reading this. Why not share with me? I believe they are many more things I need to learn to be a professional SOHO.

Bottom line. I enjoy being a SOHO. Indeed SOHO-ing gives me freedom. I get control in whatever I do. But sometime I am thinking will this make me even more lazy or not. I do doubt whether will I achieve my goals or not. It is confusing and not secured. Besides doing my parts, I guess I can only keep praying. Wish me luck!

The Next 5000 Days of WWW

Okay. I still remember I have promise to update my blog everyday and today is the second day. (I almost miss it actually :p ) So here you go. I found this interesting presentation video done by the famous Kevin Kelly predicting the future of World Wide Web. It is indeed an enlightenment to me.

Some background on the presentation. Internet which grew from just one computer pinging another has only 5000 days of history (at the time the video is recorded) and the World Wide Web has gone so far until today where almost everything links to the internet. Data are transferred among networks, communications are done all around the world, billions of dollars being transacted. Just 5000 days the World Wide Web has already “embedded” into our lives and we cannot actually live without it. So what do you think what will happen in the next 5000 days? Yup the video will tell you about that.

Some background on the presenter. Kevin Kelly is the editor of Wired Magazine. His background is too long for me to elaborate here but one thing, he is a great man. He wrote many books and one of it, I cannot remember what’s the name already but you can check from wikipedia, is the reference for the screen play of The Matrix Trilogy. No wonder I find his concept is a bit similar with The Matrix. Also, the presentation here is kinda related to the movie Wall-E. If you still remember, people live in the spaceship, cannot walk and never touch each others hand before. The communications and chemistry between human can only be done through computer and etc. It is kinda same thing here you think deep enough.

Okay enough crap, here is the video. Hope you will like it.

I’m back!

Finally, after years of “vacations”, lowkei’s blog is back. Okay, this time I am going to be very serious in blogging. I will make sure I write a post everyday. Yes you heard me right..it’s E.V.E.R.Y.D.A.Y! (whispering “50 bucks bet he won’t”) Oh come on, you should encourage me. Anyway, I should update a bit on where I have been during the “vacations”.

Basically what I have done are:-

  • Traveled a few places
  • Eaten some special nice food
  • Club a little bit
  • Work a little bit
  • and most importantly, gain a few pounds (Damn it! Not again!)

Okay I promise I am going to go on diet! I will make sure I will get myself slimmed down! I will do sports everyday! I will control my food intake! No nasi lemak no maggie goreng! Yeah~this is exactly what I have been saying and doing for the past 10 years. LOL.. I “believe” I am doing a great job! Agree? I study engineering, and work as one for 1 and a half year but no longer am now. Yaya.. I am jobless now. So if you have any job opening that gives good pay and work least hour and if possible can work from home, do contact me okay? I strongly believe I am fit for the job. You know it’s not easy to cope with the stress at home right? But I can.. I definitely can cope with the stress, please…gimme a call..

Question, what do I do for living now? hmm..like many others around the world, I am doing some internet marketing stuff. Yaya, everybody wants to earn some bucks from the dot com so do I. I feel that internet marketing is something that provides unlimited potential to whatever you want to do. As long as you have some special ideas which are contrary from the offline world, hey, try online! You are just a few clicks from the world. You will eventually meet somebody who speaks the same language.

There are many things happening around the world, and myself. This vacations take so long and it is never ending. Bottom line, I am good, and I am back. I wish to update my life to the world. Hopefully you will join me in the blogging world.
